What Happens When You Waterproof Your Roof Alone?

4 Risks Of Waterproofing Your Basement Yourself

Waterproofing your basement is a big job. Do-it-yourself basement waterproofing kits may seem cost-effective, but they come with many risks. Here are four risks of waterproofing your basement yourself.

  1. Improperly installing window wells: Window wells are designed to let light and air into the basement. However, they can also allow water in if they’re not improperly installed. When window wells are not properly installed, water can seep through the gaps around the windows or collapse and injure anyone near them.
  2. Unintentionally create health hazards: If you’re not careful or don’t properly ventilate your basement, you could end up with condensation and mold or mildew problems that lead to respiratory issues.
  3. Failing to install a drain tile system: This system is designed to divert water away from the basement and must be installed correctly to be effective. Otherwise, water will simply bypass the drains and enter the basement through other means.
  4. Not sealing wall cracks: If you don’t seal the walls correctly, water can seep through cracks and gaps, and you risk leaks developing or trapping mold and mildew inside.
